“Estate Romana” (Roman Summer) has been a fixture for thirty-one years, one that draws on and transmits the very special spirit of the city through the always extensive programme of events it incorporates. The spirit of a metropolis that knows how to broaden cultural horizons whilst having fun and one is born of a thoroughly cosmopolitan capital that also wants to share its own wealth of local traditions with the rest of the world. This year, Estate Romana will once again be offering residents and a great many visitors not only a series of occasions and places associated with entertainment and the performing arts, but also the pleasure of really experiencing different parts of the city and making them their own. Everywhere, from the city centre through to the suburbs, will be enlivened with a programme of events that comprises literally hundreds of fixtures. It will be a summer during which every corner of the city will once again feature anything from music to cinema, art or theatre, activities for children to get involved in, and of course dance and readings of prose and poetry have not been forgotten either. The 2008 edition of Estate Romana comes, as always, with a calendar featuring an array of events, festivals and dates to suit all tastes and Roman nights will be packed with countless happenings that mix old favourites with exciting new spectacles. Between the music, theatre, literature, cinema and dance on offer, there is far too much to describe here in any detail. But in keeping with the true spirit of the Estate Romana, activities in local neighbourhoods throughout the city are equally important. To this end, Rome City Council invited the capital'sl borough councils to compete for funds for locally based initiatives, and this ultimately has resulted in thirty different events that will take place in various city districts and includes several high calibre classical music concerts to be held in such places as Piazza Risorgimento, Casalpalocco and Villa Gordiani. There can be no doubt therefore, that the 2008 edition is putting on a truly vast and varied programme accessible to all, a kaleidoscope of occasions and events that will once again turn Rome into a very special and exciting stage that will provide local residents and visitors alike with the opportunity to see just how alive and welcoming the city can be - a place where summer evenings can be spent in an interesting, constructive and above all pleasurable way.
